What's in the Bag? What to Pack.

Updated: May 16, 2024

I HATE packing! Whenever I go on vacation or a trip, I do about 3 packs. First is the initial, ALL IN approach. Everything I think I want to bring, what I think I'll need and so on. The second is a more thoughtful pack. The last is " I don't really need this" ultimatum. This list is dedicated to my Italy trips. I usually go in July and its hot, humid and cooler at night. Casual during the day, dressy at night. I prefer to follow a "Capsule Wardrobe" for my packing because I do not want to drag 75 lbs. of clothes and shoes around Italy. When I go to Italy, I usually stop in at least 2-3 places. I carry a backpack with my personal things and a medium sized suitcase for my checked bag. Anything more, you are subject to fitting into taxis, elevators, etc. Did you know that everything is smaller and mostly likely has cobblestones? Yep. Gross.

This is a rundown for what I would wear and pack. The links are for products on Amazon.

Airplane Outfit. Comfy, Casual.

  • Leggings, t shirt, socks, tennis shoes, hoodie, scarf.

Daytime. Casual but stylish.

  • Shorts/ skirt/ t shirt or sundress, tennis shoes, socks, shawl. I personally wear a crap ton of black and dresses because they can go from day to night with a few accessories.

  • This is when I do my sightseeing and lots of walking. Comfy shoes are a must.

  • Religious places like the Vatican, for instance will make you cover your shoulders and possibly your legs depending on what you are wearing. They will turn you away if not dressed appropriately.

Aperitivo/ Dinner Time.

  • Dress, pants/ blouse, sandals, shawl or jacket.

  • I prefer to dress up a little more at dinner because that's what most people do.

Footwear.

  • Tennis Shoes

  • Sandals. I do not wear heels in Italy.

  • Flip Flops. Beach only.

Other Stuff.

  • A fan. It's sweaty. https://amzn.to/3wCeMqa

  • Crossbody bag or Fanny pack or Crossbody phone case ( for those that don't like to carry anything)

  • Butt wipes. Not all places will have toilet paper. I throw a few individually wrapped ones in my bag, just in case. https://amzn.to/4bAZ4uc

  • Hand Sanitizer. Not all places will have soap.

  • SUNSCREEN.

  • Bug Repellent. I like repel wipes. https://amzn.to/3UGu4Ce

  • Sunglasses/ Sunhat (for the beach)

  • Swimsuit/ Coverup

  • Travel Adapter and/or Converter. * if you are bringing small electronics or appliances, you must find something that works for you. Laptops, Hairdryers, Steamers and such need to have their voltage converted. Cellphones, need an adapter only. https://amzn.to/3UGu8ls

  • Coin Purse. Those euro coins add up after awhile.

  • Liquid IV or Pedialyte powder sticks. Hydration is life.https://amzn.to/4am2eRz

  • Downy Spray. Freshens up your clothes. https://amzn.to/4bEyQak

  • Detergent packs. Sometimes you have to wash your clothes in the sink or bathtub. https://amzn.to/3K2anjh

a "Capsule Wardrobe" is utilizing several pieces for several outfits. I mostly wear dark colors and layer with jackets, sweaters and mix and match my tops with different bottoms to make different outfits. This is an example but I obviously modify it to my personal style and desired comfort.
